About the Presentation
THE FIRST 50 PAGES. The opening fifty pages carry a surprising amount of weight for beginning a novel correctly. You have to engage your reader, introduce your hero, and establish the context of the story. You’ll also be presenting the stakes, introducing the antagonist, establishing the hero’s desires, starting the main character’s inner journey, and getting a ticking time bomb to ticking down. Plus much more. And you want to do all these things without dumping backstory on your reader, misleading your reader, insulting your reader’s intelligence, or tipping your hand to your reader. In this class, Jeff shows you how to begin your novel with the skill and intentionality that keeps readers’ eyes glued to the page. (Based on The First 50 Pages, Jeff’'s second Writers Digest book on how to craft fiction.)
About the Speaker
(Due to a family emergency, our original keynote speaker, Tracie Peterson, can no longer make it. Please keep her family in prayer.)
Jeff Gerke has been called the de facto gatekeeper of Christian speculative fiction. He has a special place in his heart for "weird" Christian fiction (SF, fantasy, supernatural thrillers, etc.) and maintains a thriving Web site dedicated to those genres: WhereTheMapEnds.com. Jeff has served as an editor for Multnomah Publishers, Strang Communications, and NavPress. In 2008 Jeff launched Marcher Lord Press, an indie publishing company specializing in Christian speculative fiction. Marcher Lord Press has won several Christy Awards and ACFW Carol Awards. Under the pen name Jefferson Scott, Jeff has authored six Christian novels and coauthored several nonfiction books. His fiction craft how-to books include The Art & Craft of Writing Christian Fiction and two by Writers Digest Books: Plot Versus Character and The First 50 Pages. He is a founding member of The Bestsellers Society and the CEO of FictionAcademy.com. Jeff lives in Colorado Springs with his wife and three children.
Conference is over.
